Class Notes February 16

Finally got back to the studio. My fingers itch when I am not there -- mentally and sometimes physically.

Was a very good day, a solid day of production. The kind of day I need if I am going to be a professional potter instead of a potter. I had to work at a slower pace than I would have liked because of the limited space but that's okay. I threw three, three pound bowls to replace the bowls my little monkeys have broken, and a larger four and a half pound bowl. Got 'em under the fan and out to be trimmed while glazing three other pots. Two were mine from previous classes (a honey pot, and a night light) the last one is a real honest to goodness "Kevin Crow" tea bowl.

When he gave the last class, one of the demonstrations was on tea bowls and throwing off the hump. Off the hump is were you put a large amount of clay on the wheel centering only the little bit you need and then cutting it off continuing until all gone. It's a production potters technique and from what I remember it is also used a lot in oriental pottery. At any rate not to digress too far - at the end of the class Kevin handed out a tea bowl to each attendee for us to bisque and glaze in whatever fashion we would like.

I had bisque it months ago, but I had left it set unglazed mainly because I couldn't decide what I wanted on it.

I could have probably thrown and trimmed at least another six bowls in the time frame but likeI said I had to deal with a limited amount of space, it was good to be in the groove, I love the zen of the wheel.
